I was reading about the GM issue thats going on in India right now. A bio-food company, partly owned by Monsanto, want farmers in India to use their seeds for farming eggplant. And the Indian Govt. has put that plan on hold citing further testing. Good for them. Monsanto is widely known for trying to take control of the world food supply. Their seeds are patented, and therefore you get into a licensing agreement with Monsanto. The farmers are forbidden from saving seeds for the next season. They must buy new seed from the company each season. This denies farmers’ right to save seed. The implications of this are huge for poor farmers. Saved seed is the one resource that the poor farmers depend upon to carry them through the year. Another thing, the Monsanto high-yield seed is a one time use seed. The plant that grows from it produces impotent seeds. So if you want to replant, then you need to buy seeds - from Monsanto of course. |
