The MET Costume Institue Gala: Summer Trends

Kanan Kothari

The MET Costume Institute Gala is one of the most exciting nights of fashion all year. Celebrities are out and no one is playing it safe.  Here’s a quick wrap up of the best dressed.  My best dressed list of course involves who looked great and rocked their dress the best, but also which looks are the most fashion convertible.  Meaning...which celebrity styles from the MET Gala can any fashonista take on and own herself this summer.

I love Emma Watson. She always looks age appropriate and elegant and this evening was no exception.  She was beautifully sporting a floor length, asymmetrical, Burberry gown (for whom she is a spokes model).  Asymmetrical was huge last summer and it is back again this season.  The easiest way to wear this look is a fun and playful one sleeved tank.  It works on all body types and gives a simple outfit a sexy flavour.

Ok, so clearly not any gal can pull of the Marchesa dress Blake Lively wore, but there is a huge style cue to be taken from it.  The colour. This deep blue (nearly navy) compliments almost every skin tone and can be done in many different ways in your summer wardrobe. Try a great skirt in this blue or even fun accessories, like a leather bag or wedged sandals.  We all can’t have Blake’s killer body, but we can easily incorporate this great colour into our closet.

Finally, something that I often shy away from, a little shimmer or sparkle.  Many belles of the ball showed off this trend, including JLo and Sarah Jessica Parker.  Another great look for the summer months which instantly make any outfit more feminine.  If you’re not the uber girly type, try adding some twinkle through smaller accessories like a hair piece, a belt of a little clutch.

Who do you think was the best dressed of the night? And, what are some of the summer trends you are looking forward to rocking?

How to Look Like a Million Bucks (without breaking the bank!)

Sarah M.

It's all in the details!

The term 'investment piece' is thrown about quite frequently in the fashion world, and not without good reason. When it comes to the consistently necessary pieces in your wardrobe - a great pair of jeans, a stunning party dress, your everyday handbag - you may want to invest a little bit more money in brands like Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Moschino and D&G amongst many, many other designer brands that have lower-priced lines. Keep in mind that these items are not the same for everyone; if you're a bohemian freelance graphic designer living in Kensington Market chances are your choices in this respect are going to be worlds apart from a Bay Street condo-dwelling mutual funds banker, so it is imperative that you take into account your personal wardrobe needs and lifestyle when deciding what you'll get the most value out of.

Spring/Summer 2010: Easy to Wear Looks

Kanan Kothari

A wise lady once said the only way to get through the dreary January-March stint is to (perhaps prematurely) begin looking forward to spring and summer shopping!  I know this sounds like a bit of a stretch to some, especially many men out there. But, the advent of summer inspired colours, mini skirts and tank tops is a real site for sore eyes when you’ve been stuck in a down jacket for 5 months.

If you’re like me, and frankly cannot afford to go out and buy every Calvin Klein handbag or Diane von Furstenberg skirt for the coming season, I recommend trying to find a few key runway trends to integrate into your already existing spring/summer wardrobe. Here are a few that will help you shake off the February blues and which shouldn’t be too hard to replicate at a much cheaper price…
