The Only 5 Products Your Beauty Cabinet ACTUALLY Needs

Sarah M.

As a woman, it’s hard to not be veritably overwhelmed by the plethora of products being peddled to us as the next best thing in beauty. Too often we find ourselves witlessly handing over our hard-earned cash for creams and lotions and potions and shadows that, quit simply, leave our wallets significantly lighter and our faces looking…well, just about the same.

If you’ve found yourself in this situation and currently have a bathroom cabinet overflowing with bottles and tubs of things you’ve used at most once, you’ll be delighted to hear that there are actually only five products in there that are essential to you looking your best. If you’re interested in looking better and saving money and bathroom storage space, look no further than these simple, relatively inexpensive and tried, tested and true things.

The recession and the pessimism that has come with it has gone on long enough where the fashion world is concerned; the dreary, drab silhouettes of past seasons may have been reflecting our attitudes towards the world and our bank statements, but let's be honest, also haven't made us women look our best. The minimalist androgyny we've been seeing as a trend may work for you if you're proportioned like the six foot tall glamazons that grace advertising campaigns, but for all intents and purposes, it nonetheless feels as though a fundamental femininity in fashion has been lost. Where are all the skirts, the colors, the bright lipsticks?

Spring/Summer 2010: Easy to Wear Looks

Kanan Kothari

A wise lady once said the only way to get through the dreary January-March stint is to (perhaps prematurely) begin looking forward to spring and summer shopping!  I know this sounds like a bit of a stretch to some, especially many men out there. But, the advent of summer inspired colours, mini skirts and tank tops is a real site for sore eyes when you’ve been stuck in a down jacket for 5 months.

If you’re like me, and frankly cannot afford to go out and buy every Calvin Klein handbag or Diane von Furstenberg skirt for the coming season, I recommend trying to find a few key runway trends to integrate into your already existing spring/summer wardrobe. Here are a few that will help you shake off the February blues and which shouldn’t be too hard to replicate at a much cheaper price…

Must-Have Hair & Beauty Trends, Spring 2010

Sarah M.

This upcoming spring season it’s all about a return to romantic naturalism with a definitively modern edge. From the violet-hued eye shadows and bare lips seen on the runways of Dior to the stark simplicity of top-knots and mascara’d minimalism at Marc Jacobs, it is clear that overdone is done with where hair and beauty are concerned, which is definitely good news for those of us with over-processed, winter dry skin and more split ends than we know what to do with!

To stay on trend without breaking the bank, look to drugstore brands like Rimmel and Maybelline for brightly coloured eyeliners which you can use to create fresh, youthful peepers as seen in the picture above. Conversely, if you prefer a more subtle look like the one below, keep an eye out for shimmery bronzers and blush powders that are more golden than brown, and if applied correctly will give you that beach babe glow regardless of whether or not you’re a stone’s throw from the waterfront or, conversely, stuck in the downtown urban jungle! Just remember: good skin and well-made brushes go a long way, so make a trip to Sephora or a professional beauty supply shop where the experts can show you how to perfectly apply any product.
