Hi folks, welcome to my new blog on ibiz. I am a musician (banjo, guitar, mandolin) based in Toronto, Canada. I have been blogging for about six years and working as a professional musician for about twenty five years.
I am planning on making this blog a place to talk about music. More specifically it will mostly be about the music business. Often the technology involved is the key element in the changes we see in the music business and this is what interests me.
Most recently the development of online music sales has been a big change in our lives as music entrepreneurs. The idea of getting our recordings (usually CDs) around the world and into record stores is almost a dead idea.
One of the websites where my CDs are available is called CD Baby. They are now selling download cards to their customers. (by customers I mean the people that use the website to sell CDs)
The download card is something that I could sell at live performances to people who would rather have downloads than actual product. My question to you is this; would you buy download cards at a concert?
It seems to me that the type of people who buy music online are already savvy enough to figure out where and how to find it. I guess the one thing it has going for it is that I can charge what I want for the music. For example, I could undercut itunes and sell the CD for $7.99 instead of $9.99. In this case the people save money and I make all the money.
